The Story of Tomato Thyme: A Local Dream, A Family Legacy

At Tomato Thyme, family and food go hand in hand. Our story began long before the restaurant's doors first opened — it's a journey fueled by passion, hard work, and a deep-rooted love for community, fresh food, and connection.

A Pizza Beginning

John Smith got his start in the pizza business at just 20 years old, when he became the Northern California franchisor for a budding concept called Stuft Pizza. With energy, vision, and a hands-on approach, John helped open, operate, and franchise 14 locations across the region — a feat that shaped the foundation for everything that came next.

But after years of success, John and his wife, Holly, dreamed of something more — a place that wasn't just about pizza, but about gathering around a table to share a full experience: hearty pastas, fresh salads, sizzling grilled dishes, a welcoming bar, and yes, still some incredible pizza too.

In 2003, that dream came to life when Tomato Thyme was born.

A Restaurant Built on Heart

Tomato Thyme wasn't just a new menu — it was a whole new mindset. John and Holly designed the restaurant to feel like an extension of their own home: approachable, warm, and family-friendly, with attentive service and an easygoing atmosphere.

Their commitment to freshness and quality shines through everything they serve, blending California flavors with Italian inspiration — but with no "rules" other than making food that's vibrant, comforting, and full of life.

From the start, they've believed in supporting local small businesses — sourcing ingredients from neighbors like La Villa Deli and J. Lohr Wines — and staying closely connected to the community by championing local schools and nonprofits.  Above all, they credit the success of Tomato Thyme to their incredible team of employees, who are truly the heart of the house.

Rooted in the Community

The Smith family knows San Jose in their bones.  John, originally from Oceanside, CA, moved up north in 1978, bringing with him a love of adventure that included dirt bike racing and Supercross competitions.  His hard-charging, competitive nature still fuels him in all his endeavors.

Holly, born in San Jose and raised over the hill in Santa Cruz/Aptos.  Her visits to grandparents in San Jose as a child, brought her to the Willow Glen area where she frequented the very shopping center where Tomato Thyme stands today — never imagining that one day, she'd return here to open a restaurant with her own family.

Today, their son Devin works alongside them, involved in every aspect of operations, helping carry the family's passion and dedication into the future.

The Spirit of Tomato Thyme

Our story isn't flashy — it's real.  It's about two people who started humbly, believed in quality and community, and built a place where anyone can come, relax, and enjoy a meal made with care.

Whether you're gathering your family for a pizza night, sipping a craft cocktail at the bar, or indulging in your favorite pasta dish, you're experiencing the heart and soul that's been poured into Tomato Thyme from day one.

And we're just getting started.  Thank you for being part of our story — we can't wait to keep sharing it with you for many more years to come.

P.S. Many guests also know and love our sister concept, Dry Creek Grill, launched in 2012 just steps away from Tomato Thyme — offering an elevated "date night" experience while keeping the same spirit of fresh, local, and heartfelt hospitality.
